Will you be playing Cyberpunk 2077? Will you be playing at release or will you wait?
Either method you chose, you won’t be able to get a taste of multiplayer for quite some time. When exactly?
The release of the Cyberpunk 2077 base game is set for December 10, 2020. The multiplayer on the other hand… is quite a while a way.
We can only speculate when CD Projekt will deliver the supposed “standalone” multiplayer version of the game. The word on the street is that CD Projekt has brought in AAA multiplayer gaming gurus from Digital Scapes Studios to aid in delivering the finished Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer product. This could be a good thing, but what does that mean? Current speculation in the gaming community tells us to think GTA Online when trying to picture the multiplayer variety of Cyberpunk 2077. Should we though? What other options are out there? Multiplayer cooperative play? Digital Scapes studios had a hand in creating the multiplayer for Dying Light. Which was a cooperative play rather than a more sand box style like GTA Online. Would this make sense?
The game Cyberpunk 2077 seems a bit more like GTA Online in what we have seen so far. I would much more prefer the GTA Online style of game versus a Dying Light type of experience. I did enjoy Dying Light, but Cyberpunk just seems more apt to have a bunch of other real players flocking the city trying to kill you. GTA 5 made it across 3 generations of consoles having come out just before the release of Playstation 4 and XboxOne. Cyberpunk 2077 is positioned to do the same.
So what are the pros and cons to a GTA Online style of play for Cyberpunk 2077?
CON – GTA Online is known for its microtransactions (Shark Cards). Shark cards made the game lean toward pay-2-win. Especially in the earlier days. Now, of course, you can make plenty of GTA$ just by logging in during events which allows you to buy end game toys like the Oppressor Mk II.
PRO – GTA Online tries to create a sandbox style of multiplayer. Rockstar does this primarily by pitting specific numbers of players into a world (server) together. Which would be very difficult in a Co-op type of a multiplayer. This can only truly be done on a more MMO basis. This also means that this style of game will create large scale group events which I love.
There aren’t many more pros / cons. This is just speculation but each alternative is merely up to the players preferences as to what style they like more. I prefer the MMO type experience so this would be perfect for me. Even the microtransactions are made better by making it larger scale multiplayer. This is only because it makes it easier for you to show off your toys, like we all do in GTA Online.
I am severely looking forward to the game’s release on 10 Dec. 2020. Come join me:
