Throwback Challenge 2020 Pokemon Go – May Event 2020 Kanto Review

Many of you were able to get the first installment of the May 2020 Throwback Challenge: Kanto Special Research Tasks. I had to wait til May 1st at 1300 to get my first crack at it. Alas, my time came and I completed all the tasks in Throwback Challenge: Kanto, within the first few hours. How was my experience with this?

The first mission was quite easy as a variety of 1st Gen Pokemon popped up right as I was getting an understanding of the event itself. It was in my Today Research rather than Special Research where I expected it to be. I did eventually get angry enough to check more than one place, and we were off on our adventure.

COVID-19 Impacts? We are still in a state of pandemic and quarantine where I have decided to do my first Throwback Challenge. Luckily, a few more places have begin to open up around town, and I was able to use my new Remote Raid Passes to help in a later task.

And, just like that, I was off to wave 2. of 9.

Finding a raid during a quarantine could have been very difficult. Luckily, I had remote raid pass there to guide me through!

Shout out to @thecapnjarsh – for helping me take down the mighty Venipede

Not sure if this fllow was physically at the gym or battling remotely like me, but we were likely there for the same reason. I know that I have had enough Venipede Raids to last me for a bit.

Catching an electric Pokemon was easy, and with my enormous stockpile of various candy’s made the evolution stage easy too. There were plenty of electric types for me to choose from. Magnemite was in abundance, as was this new variation of Pikachu!

Just like that, was onto 4/9.

  • Give your buddy a treat
  • Send a gift to a friend
  • Catch a Grass-type Pokemon

These were the tasks to accomplish for 4 of 9. Completing all of these will get you a Dratini, Gastly, and Tangela. Quite a nice haul!

Nothing too special here, but a good chance to add to those Ultra Balls.

Biggest issue I had here was catching a Fighting-type Pokemon, until I realized Hitmonchan was the reward for taking a snapshot of a Ghost-type Pokemon. Then it was smooth sailing. Onto my Mewtwo!

  • Power up a Pokemon 6 times
  • Battle another Trainer
  • Catch a Ground-type Pokemon

Luckily, playing 2 accounts pays off sometimes for a solo player. I was able to find a battle partner, even in lockdown-like scenarios. AND, there it was waiting for me.

So my thoughts on this first installment of Throwback Challenge: Kanto Pokemon Go Event?

Absolutely brilliant and perfectly timed.

This event couldn’t have come at a better time. Remote raids, simple yet fun tasks -this was the event we were all hoping for. Who knows what the dastardly Coronavirus has in store for us moving forward, but this event let us feel like we were still playing the game. I had an absolute blast. I couldn’t play solely at home. I probably could have, but it would have taken forever -costing me a fortune in Incense. I was able to stay within the neighborhood though, which is the point.

I highly recommend getting this game asap if you do not play it yet. There will only be 6 more days left to do this event as it is timed. This is a chance for everyone to get a legendary Pokemon.

Great event… Looking forward to the next installment: Throwback Challenge: Johto

Thanks for reading.
